Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets

You may or may not have noticed the bulletin board in the school hallway outside of my office. If you haven't, please take some time to read it.

The message behind this bulletin board (thank you Stacey Stahl for your creativity!!) is the idea surrounding learning mindsets. Mindsets are beliefs—beliefs about yourself and your most basic qualities. Think about your intelligence, your talents, your personality. Are these qualities simply fixed traits, carved in stone and that’s that? Or are they things you can cultivate throughout your life? (Dweck, 2010). That's a tough question, but this is what the research says about these two types of mindsets:

Fixed mindsets believe that we are all born with a specific set of traits and the ones that we are given are fixed-unable to be changed. I'm bad at math, so I will always be bad at math. I can't play the piano, so I will never be able to play the piano. I can't subtract fractions, so I will never understand fractions.

A growth mindset is very different. People with a growth mindset believe that with the right amount of determination and effort we can growth and develop at anything we set our minds to. To me, this means that all of our students can learn and they can learn at exponential rates if we continue to give them opportunities to practice and try to get it right. I can't play this song my violin...yet! I don't know how to subtract fractions....yet! I don't know how to shoot a basket...yet!

Sometimes when our students are working on assignment or when they take a test they might not be demonstrating proficiency….YET! This does not mean that they won’t ever get it, that they can’t learn it, or that they are just “not very strong” in that subject. We limit our students when we live with fixed mindsets.

Moving forward, here at Bethlehem Lutheran School, we are going to explore opportunities and provide strategies to develop grit and determination, resilience and effort, and perseverance and optimism. We are going to focus on the "YET!!" and through these opportunities, we will help our students to grow and develop in all areas of their lives. This may make things look different like homework assignments, opportunities to retake a test, additional coaching and practice on sports' teams, asking people to try something new that is out of their comfort zone. Who knows? The possibilities are endless.

Join me in changing our mindsets from "I can't do this" to "I can't do this...YET!!"

PTL Tailgate Party

We had a fantastically fun time at our PTL Tailgate Party. The PTL gave away prizes, cooked up some yummy food, and had a flag football game with parents/staff against students. We enjoy this time together as we fellowship and get to know each other better. The stronger our relationships become, the stronger our school will be. I am thankful for each of you! And I am thankful for our PTL volunteers and all of the creative ideas they come up with to bring us together. Job Well Done Bethlehem!

Welcome Back to School!!

Today was a great first day of school! Opening service was energetic and focused on just how unstoppable God is in our lives. We learned how to praise Him when things are going well and lean into Him when we are struggling.

We learned that He makes all things possible!!

I am excited about the things He is going to do this year both in and through our faculty, staff, and students! And I look forward to partnering with all of our families to make this the best school year yet!!

Elevation Worship - Unstoppable God (Lyric)

This year's school theme is "Unstoppable God!"
Our theme verse is Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens me."

Today we practiced our new song and learned new motions for our theme verse. Keep practicing! I can't wait for next week to hear you singing praises to the King!!

One Thing

"All I know is, everything I have means nothing, Jesus, if you're not my ONE THING!"

As we reflect on Holy Week and the ultimate sacrifice Jesus paid so we can have eternal life in heaven, I know that the victory of the empty tomb means everything to me.

I hope and pray that you listen closely to the message of hope this week, and if you haven't already done so, make Jesus your ONE THING! He deeply desires your heart!

Unusual Kindness

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope that everyone had a restful and relaxing time. We have just over two months of school left. That is so hard to believe. I am looking forward to all of the fun activities we have planned as we finish up the school year!!

I was reading a devotion that I shared with the faculty this morning and it has had quite the impact on me so I wanted to share it with you too. The idea was that often times we do random acts of kindness for others, but do we stop and think about doing unusual acts of kindness? I shared this with some students this morning as well and was pleasantly surprised at how easily they caught on to the idea. It's about being the hands and feet of Jesus.

The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. Acts 28:1-2

Unusual acts of kindness go above and beyond. They are truly unusual. The islanders did not welcome Paul and the other prisoners because of some important reason or important status. They welcomed them just because it was raining and cold.

Think about doing an act of unusual kindness today. Be intentional about doing more whether it be for your family and friends or a stranger at the grocery store!

Much love to you all!

~Dr. Frederick

One Simple Word....HOPE!

I love this song and wanted to share it with you.

Powerful words!!

I have this hope in the DEPTH of my SOUL!!

Romans 5:1-5
"Since we have been made right with God by our faith, we have peace with God. This happened through our Lord Jesus Christ, who through our faith has brought us into that blessing of God’s grace that we now enjoy. And we are happy because of the hope we have of sharing God’s glory. We also have joy with our troubles, because we know that these troubles produce patience. And patience produces character, and character produces hope. And this hope will never disappoint us, because God has poured out his love to fill our hearts. He gave us his love through the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to us." (NCV)

Read-A-Thon Fundraiser

Hi Everyone! We are excited to announce the....

Bethlehem Read-A-Thon!!!

This year, we have decided to get our kids' creativity stirring as they get lost in the adventures of a great book! For two weeks, we will be reading our hearts out as we ask for donations of support for our school. Each child will be reading during the whole school reading sessions each morning and they will also be logging minutes during at home reading sessions too!

Information was sent home Friday with the students. Each child has a profile page set up and they can ask for donations through a variety of social media or through phone calls or texts to relatives and friends. Donors can place donations online or pay in cash or check made out to Bethlehem Lutheran School and sent in an envelope to the child's teacher.

Please join me in encouraging our children to read and in supporting God's mighty work here at Bethlehem Lutheran School. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Engelhardt at 755-1144 ext 209.

If you would like to make a financial donation to support the Bethlehem Read-A-Thon, but are not connected with a specific student, please email nfrederick@bethlehemsaginaw.org. Thank you!

Muffins with Moms

Thank you to all of the moms who came to "Muffins with Moms" with their kiddos this morning. We had a great turnout! Stay tuned for information regarding Doughnuts with Dad on March 15th.
